KPEL personality Tootie Landry goes "Off the Grid" with Meche's Donuts in Lafayette to learn how to make King Cakes!

"Hey! I'm Tootie Landry and this is 'Off the Grid!'"

Anyone that knows me well knows I don't know how to cook and I know even less about baking or frying. I don't own a cookie sheet or a deep fryer. My cabinets in my kitchen look like a 3rd world country. Heck! I've been known to break out in a rash, just by standing near my oven!

However, it's Mardi GRAS Season and I love king cakes. Maybe it's the whole 'baby' thing or the sugar high, but king cakes are some of my favorite pastries.

So this past Monday morning, I got up with the roosters and headed to Meche 's Donuts on Kaliste Saloom Road. The owners, Willie and Michele, were kind enough to show me how king cakes are made. As I arrived, I quickly realize I'm not going to be a spectator here but a participant. I'm handed a hat and apron, and put on the assembly line faster than you can say 'kolache!' Folks! This was tedious work! There are so many people working here but yet everything is flowing. Except with me. It's raining flour everywhere! This is hard work. I'm kneading, braiding, frying, and even painting my cake. My cake is about to start raining doubloons!

But the best part of this experience, I didn't even break out in a rash!

And I'm Tootie Landry and I'm 'Off the Grid!'"
