LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — Former Lafayette Parish school superintendent Pat Cooper's challenge of his November firing heads to trial Sept. 15.

Cooper filed a wrongful termination claim against the school board shortly after the then-board voted 7-2 to fire him over some of his management decisions.

Cooper claims he was fired without cause and the board's decision was political and done for "reasons of vindictiveness."

The Advocate reports (http://bit.ly/1PiqlFM) the board's decision came after a two-day hearing at which Cooper had an opportunity to defend himself against allegations that he broke with board policy and state law related to management and budgetary decisions.

Last week, Cooper's attorney requested that the court set a trial date.
