This has been an average hurricane season in many respects. It has also been highly unusual for one very significant reason. There have been no hurricanes. The number of named storms has been right on target with the preseason forecast and averages. However there is usually at least one hurricane by this time of the season.

Tropical Storm Humberto just might be that first hurricane. The system started as a tropical wave pushing off the west coast of Africa last week. The warm waters of the tropical Atlantic have aided Humberto to strengthen to tropical storm status.

The current forecast track from the Hurricane Center indicates Humberto should strengthen but not pose a threat to any land area any time soon. The forecast models suggest that Humberto will in fact stay out at sea before finally dissipating after the next several days.
