What can get Democrats and Republicans to unite? A good cause, of course!

It’ll be the La. legislators’ version of Spring football when Democrats and Republicans go head-to-head on Sunday, April 21 in the first “Truce for the Troops Bowl” – and they’ll do it in Tiger Stadium.

Lawmakers will raise money in support of our military through Operation Homefront Louisiana, a nonprofit organization that provides emergency financial and other assistance to the families of service members and wounded warriors. The fundraiser is hosted by the House Special Committee on Military and Veteran Affairs.

Captains Nick Lorusso, a Republican representative out of New Orleans, and John Bel Edwards, a Democratic Representative out of Amite, have made a friendly wager on the game: a “liberal portion” of Amite cuisine if Lorusso’s team wins, and a “conservative portion” of Edwards’ choice if the Democrats win.

“I look forward to a friendly game, between my Democrat and Republican colleagues in the State Legislature,” says Rep. Lorusso. “This event is a great way for us to put aside our political differences and show support for our troops.  It goes without saying that I look forward to my ‘liberal portion’ of Amite cuisine, courtesy of Representative Edwards.”

Kickoff will be at 4:00 p.m., with the gates opening up at 2:00 p.m. Tickets for the game are $50, students pay $10 for admittance and children 12 and under are free. The ticket price includes admission, a behind the scenes LSU football facility tour, activities for kids, and a reception in the Stadium Club level following the game. Player participation fees and sponsorships will also be used to raise money for our troops.
