*UPDATE* - Victims of the accident were Abbeville resident Sandeep Patel and his brother Satyen Patel from India.

Police in Broussard are investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash that left two people dead early Sunday morning and resulted in their vehicle being destroyed by a fire.

According to investigators, the driver of a Toyota Camry and the driver of a dark-colored truck crashed near the intersection of U.S. 90 and La. 92. Both drivers drove away from the scene, but the Camry ended up in the median U.S. 90 in front of Le Triomphe.

When police arrived on the scene, investigators said the driver of the Camry appeared to be dead. As they tried to rescue the passenger, whose legs were pinned underneath the driver's seat, the vehicle caught fire. Police said they tried to put out the fire before firefighters arrived, using five fire extinguishers, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

The identities of the two inside the Camry have yet to be determined because of the condition of their bodies after the fire. Police are still trying to work out the identity of the other driver.

It's believed alcohol was a factor in the crash, police said. The accident remains under investigation.
