UL Softball Completes Sweep, Defeats Appalachian St., 14-0

The 7th-ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajun softball team was victorious on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Appalachian St. Mountaineers, 14-0, in 5-inning, mercy-rule fashion, at Lamson Park.

Louisiana smashed three homers, giving them seven long balls for the weekend, while junior right-hander Alex Stewart tossed a one-hitter over four innings, to propel the Cajuns to the win

The win gave Louisiana a sweep in the three-game, weekend, Sun Belt Conference series, after capturing both ends of a doubleheader against Appalachian St. on Saturday, by scores of 13-4 and 14-2, both five innings.

The victory increased the Cajuns’ current Sun Belt Conference win streak to 12 games, and their current home win streak to 17 games, while the setback moved the Mountaineers’ current losing streak to 10 games.

UL ended up outscoring Appalachian St., 41-6, in the three games over the weekend.

Louisiana got on the scoreboard first, scoring three runs in the bottom half of the first inning, helped out by bases loaded walks to freshman third baseman Kara Gremillion and freshman catcher Miranda Grotenhuis, to grab a quick 3-0 lead.

The Cajuns added to their lead plating three runs in the bottom half of the second inning on a three-run home run by sophomore shortstop D.J. Sanders, her 15th of the season, to increase their lead to 6-0.

Louisiana put the game completely away in the bottom half of the third inning, plating five more runs, with the highlight of the frame being a three-run homer by senior left-fielder Shellie Landry, her 13th of the year, to widen their advantage to 11-0.

Louisiana, who outhit Appalachian St., 10-1, was led at the plate by Landry, who drove in four runs, while Landry, Sanders, and Vincent all homered.

Stewart (20-3) recorded the win in the circle for the Cajuns, tossing a one-hitter over 4 innings, while striking out 9 batters.

Claire Eosso (0-3) suffered the loss for the Mountaineers, allowing 10 runs, on 4 hits and 8 walks, in 2.1 innings of work.

With the triumph, Louisiana improved to 35-6, overall, and 16-1 in Sun Belt Conference play, while Appalachian St. fell to 9-38, and 2-19, respectively.

The Cajuns return to action on Saturday, when they travel to Statesboro, Georgia, to take on the Georgia Southern Eagles in a doubleheader, representing the first two games of a three-game Sun Belt Conference series.
