The 13th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajun softball team opened up their 2014 regular season schedule by splitting a pair of games in day one of the 2014 Louisiana Classic Tournament at Lamson Park on Saturday, defeating the Northern Iowa Panthers, 10-8, in eight innings, before falling to the 10th-ranked Texas Longhorns, 10-7.

In the match-up against Northern Iowa, the Cajuns fell behind, 7-1, before scoring four runs in the sixth, and three more in the seventh, to take an 8-7 lead.

After the Panthers tied it with a run in their half of the seventh, evening the game at 8-8, UL scored two more runs in the top of the eighth, to capture the two-run win.

Sophomore catcher Lexie Elkins led the way at the plate for Louisiana, going 3-for-5, with two homers, two runs scored, and three RBI's, while freshman outfielder Haley Hayden also collected three hits.

Sophomore designated player Sara Corbello and senior first baseman Shelbi Redfearn helped the offense as well, with both players belting home runs, as the Cajuns hit five in the game.

Jordan Wallace (1-0), recorded the win, pitching two innings of relief, while Nicole Fisher (1-1) suffered the loss.

With the win, Louisiana improved to 1-0 on the year, while Northern Iowa fell to 1-1.

 

In the game against Texas, Louisiana got off to a great start, scoring five runs in the top half of the first, before Texas scored one in the bottom of the first, and three more in the bottom of the fourth, cutting the UL lead to 5-4.

After the Cajuns scored two runs in the top of the fifth, to extend their lead to 7-4, the Longhorns tied it, with three more in the bottom of the fifth, before adding another three runs in the bottom of the sixth, to take a 10-7, which is how the scoring ended.

Sophomore third baseman paced the Cajuns in a losing cause, going 2-for-3, with a home run and two RBI's, while Redfearn collected two hits as well.

Tiarra Davis (1-0) picked up the win for the Longhorns, while Wallace (1-1) was hit with the loss for the Cajuns.

With the victory, Texas moved to 3-0 on the young season, while Louisiana dropped to 1-1.

The Cajuns will play twice more on Saturday, facing North Carolins at 2 o'clock, before squaring off with Texas again at 4:30 pm.
