The 20th-ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns softball opened up their 2017 road schedule in Mobile, Alabama on Saturday, defeating the South Alabama Jaguars in a Sun Belt Conference contest.

Louisiana won the first game of a scheduled doubleheader, 8-3, before the second game was suspended due to rain, in the 4th inning, with the Cajuns leading 3-0.

The second game will resume tomorrow, at noon, with UL leading, 3-0, with the scheduled third game of the series to follow.

The win in the opener gives the Cajuns 22 wins in 28 games against South Alabama since the Jaguars joined the Sun Belt Conference back in 2007.

The triumph also ran UL’s Sun Belt Conference win streak to 9 games, dating back to last season.

In the opener, Louisiana got on the scoreboard first, and in a big way, scoring four runs on five hits in the top half of the second inning, including a run-scoring triple by Lexie Comeaux, and a two-out, two-run double off the bat of Kara Gremillion, to give them a 4-0 lead.

South Alabama scored their first run in the bottom half of the third inning, when Haleigh Lane drove home a run with two outs, to trim the deficit to 4-1.

The Cajuns widened their advantage in the top half of the 5th inning, when Aleah Craighton blasted a solo home run, her 6th of the season, to make it 5-1.

Louisiana added two more runs in the top half of the 6th inning, including a two-out run-scoring single by Gremillion, to make it 7-1.

The Jaguars drew closer in the bottom half of the 6th inning, when freshman Morgan Lutticken hit a 2-run homer, the first of her career, to make the score 7-3

Louisiana pushed an insurance run across the plate in the top half of the 7th inning, when Kassidy Zeringue drove home a run with two outs, to make it 8-3.

That was all the Cajuns needed, as they cruised to the 5-run triumph.

UL, who outhit USA, 11-7, was led at the plate by Zeringue, who went 3-for-4, while Craighton collected two hits, including a home run, and Gremillion also picked-up two hits, and drove in three runs.

Alyssa Denham (9-1) recorded the win in the circle for the Cajuns, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits in 7 innings pitched.

Devin Brown (9-5) suffered the loss for the Jaguars, allowing 7 runs on 9 hits in 5.2 innings of work.

In the second game, just like in game one, it was Louisiana that got on the scoreboard first, scoring a run in the top half of the second inning, courtesy of a solo homer by DJ Sanders, her 14th of the season, to give them a 1-0 advantage.

The Cajuns added two more runs in the top half of the third inning, when Sanders drove home a run with a single, and Daniella Chavez also drove home a run, with a fielders choice grounder, to widen their lead to 3-0.

The rain came in the fourth inning, suspending the game, which will be resumed on Sunday at noon.

With the win in the first game, Louisiana improved to 21-5, overall, and 4-0 in league play, while South Alabama dropped to 19-10, and 2-5, respectively.

The two teams will conclude the series with a single game on Sunday, following the completion of the suspended game.
