The 20th-ranked ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajun softball team split a pair of games in day two of the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational on Saturday at Lamson Park, losing to the sixth-ranked Michigan Wolverines, 15-1, before defeating the Memphis Tigers, 13-2.

Both games ended early, via the mercy rule, with the game against Michigan lasting four-and-a-half innings, while the game against Memphis went six innings.

In the Michigan game, the Wolverines scored two unearned runs off of Louisiana starter Alex Stewart in the first inning, and never looked back, plating five runs in the second inning, seven in the third, and one more in the fourth.

The only run for the Cajuns came in the fifth inning, when Samntha Walsh singled, and later score on a two-out double off the bat of Hayley Hayden.

Michigan shortstop Sierra Romero led the way, offensively, for the Wolverines, going 3-for-4, including a grand slam home run, along with three runs scored and four RBI's, while right-fielder Nicole Sappingfield went 3-for-4, along with two runs and two RBI's.

Hayden drove in the only run for Louisiana, who was held to five hits.

Haylie Wagner (3-0) picked-up the win for the Wolverines, while Stewart (0-2) suffered the loss for the Cajuns.

The win pushed Michigan to 7-2 on the season, while Louisiana fell to 4-3-1.

 

In the Memphis game, the Tigers scored the first two runs of the game, with unearned runs in each of the first two innings.

Memphis held that 2-0 lead until the fifth inning, when Louisiana scored five runs, three of them courtesy of a three-run home run by Hayley Hayden.

Sara Corbello smashed a two-run homer in the fifth, pushing the UL lead to 7-2, before the Cajuns hit four home runs in the sixth inning, including back-to-back-to-back homers by Hayden, her second of the game, Lexie Elkins, and Shelbi Redfearn, to put things completely out of reach, going on to the 11-run win.

Hayden led the way, offensively, hitting two of the six home runs, while driving in five runs.

Christina Hamilton (3-0) recorded the win, while Christian Novak (2-1) got hit with the loss.

With the win, the Cajuns improved to 5-3-1, while the Tigers fell to 3-5.

 

Louisiana wraps-up play in the tournament on Sunday, taking on Central Arkansas at 2 o'clock.
