UL’s Haley Hayden Closing in Top 5 In Career Hits
Louisiana Ragin’ Cajun outfielder Haley Hayden is closing in on the top five in another school category.
The senior from Monroe has banged out 269 base hits during her career.
That’s now only 7 hits away from cracking the top five.
Remarkably consistent throughout her career with the Cajuns, Hayden accumulated 70 hits as a freshman, 69 as a sophomore, and 70 as a junior.
Through 48 games this season, Hayden has compiled 60 base hits, giving her 4-consecutive seasons with at least 60 hits.
Averaging more than one base hit per game, and with the postseason coming up, which does indeed count to toward season and career statistics, Hayden is on pace to vault into the top five.
Tiffany Clark is the all-time school hit leader, with 288 hits, one ahead of Jerie Alexander, who finished her career with 287.
For Hayden to catch those former UL greats, the Cajuns are going to have to advance deep in the postseason, and she is going to have to continue to swing the bat well.
Danyele Gomez (283), Kathy Morton (281), and Jana Mower (276) are 3-5 on the list, with Hayden 7 behind.
Louisiana played 8 postseason games last year. Just matching that number this year, could allow Hayden to leap into the top five, and playing a few more game could allow her to advance even further up the list.
A starter in centerfielder, right field, second base, and first base at various points throughout her career, Hayden will already end her career as the all-time school leader in runs scored, and she's only 9 runs batted in from moving into the top five in that category as well.
This season, Hayden, a three-time All-Louisiana first team selection, is hitting a .387, to go along with 12 home runs and 55 runs batted in, all career-highs.
Playing on the same team with All-Americans such as Lexie Elkins, Aleah Craighton, Christina Hamilton, and Alex Stewart, along with DJ Sanders, who currently leads the nation in homers, the exploits of Hayden have flown under the radar a little bit. But her career numbers validate Hayden as one of the best in program history.
