LAFAYETTE, La. (KPEL) -- United Blood Services is blaming the cold and flu season and last week's inclement weather for what they call a critical shortage of blood supplies.

Jason Conner with UBS said they are in need of type O positive and type RH negative blood donors. There is a less than one-day supply of type O positive blood, Conner said.

Several hospitals are currently waiting for orders of these blood types, Conner said.

“Every 2-to-3 seconds in this country, someone needs blood," Conner said. "And you never know when you or someone you love will be the one. We all expect blood to be available when we need it, but only a few of those who can give actually roll up their sleeves. It’s time for everyone to get involved!”

Donors are encouraged to schedule a convenient appointment time online, or call (337) 235-5433.
