Louisiana State Police are investigating the death of a 9-year-old girl from Rayne who was killed in a single vehicle crash Friday night

Master Trooper Brooks David said the child was riding unrestrained in a vehicle driven by 35-year-old Takasha Butler when the crash occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. Friday on La. 98.

David said Butler was driving eastbound on La. 98 near La. 1101 in Acadia Parish when the Chevrolet Tahoe veered off the road and over-corrected causing the SUV to overturn.

The nine-year-old was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead on the scene. Butler, and three other passengers--also unrestrained-- were transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation. Charges are pending.

Troop I has investigated 39 fatal crashes resulting in 40 deaths so far in 2016.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that distracted driving continues to be a major problem throughout Louisiana. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
