Yesterday afternoon an off-duty Sheriff's deputy observed two black men he felt were acting in a suspicious manner near the intersection of South Hospital Drive and Cougar Drive. 51 year old deputy Allen Bares Jr. identified himself and contacted the Sheriff's Office asking that officers be sent to investigate further.

When deputies arrived they found Deputy Bares had been shot multiple times. Deputies discovered that Bares' vehicle had been taken by the shooting suspects. A short time later Bares' vehicle was found in South Abbeville. The suspects identified as 20 year old Quintylan Richard and 19 year old Baylon Taylor were both taken into custody without incident last night.

Bares was taken to Abbeville General Hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries.

After questioning detectives learned that Richard and Taylor had burglarized a home on South Hospital Drive shortly before encountering and shooting Bares.

Deputy Bares had been in Law Enforcement for over twelve years. He is survived by his wife and two children.
