A vacant house at 202 North Chesnut Street in Lafayette was the scene of a mid-morning fire today. Heavy smoke was coming from the rear of the building when firefighters arrived. The fire spread to the attic causing moderate damages to the attic and roof.

The house had been vacant for a number of years and investigators are trying to determine if someone had been sleeping in the small closet where the fire originated.
