GENEVA (AP) — The Vatican says there can be "no excuse" for child abuse.

A Vatican representative told a U.N. hearing in Geneva today that "such crimes can never be justified" whether committed at home, school, sports activities or in religious organizations and structures.

Archbishop Silvano Tomasi testified at a hearing at which the Vatican is being challenged with allegations that it allowed the sexual assaults of thousands of children by protecting pedophile priests.
