A 16-year-old in Vermilion Parish is in the juvenile detention center after he allegedly stole dozens of cattle.

According to officials with the state Department of Agriculture and Forestry, authorities found the teen at a stockyard in Vermilion Parish trying to load seven heifers and load them elsewhere.

At the same stockyard, the manager found 17 cows in a back pen. He reportedly had no idea how they got there, according to a release from the department.

A brand inspector was called out to identify the cattle, which were determined to have been stolen from the same cattleman.

The teen was brought to the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office, where he confessed to the crime. He was released from the juvenile detention center on a $2,500 bond.

The estimated value of the 24 stolen cattle was $26,400, the owner said.
