While school officials in St. Landry Parish are being forced to cut nearly 200 jobs in order to manage its debt woes, schools in Vermillion Parish are hiring.

Assistant superintendent of personnel and administration Charlotte Waguespack says the school board is looking to hire as many as 72 new employees. Most of those would fill teaching positions in classrooms throughout the parish.

"We have a larger number of retirees--about double from last year," Waguespack says. "The majority are classroom teachers."

About 9,200 students are enrolled in Vermillion Parish Schools, but because of an expected increase in that number, a few more teaching positions were added, Waguespack says.

The school board is accepting applications until Friday. Interviews will likely be held next week, Waguespack says, and new hires could be considered by the board at its May 3 meeting.
