VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) — The Vicksburg National Military Park will be one of two sites chosen by the National Park Service to host signature events in 2013 as the nation remembers the Civil War.

The Vicksburg Post (http://bit.ly/MJmzmY ) reports the National Park Service wants to highlight its theme of "From Civil War to Civil Rights" at the park in Vicksburg along with the anniversary siege of Vicksburg.

The park superintendent, Michael Madell, announced the sesquicentennial plans Friday.

Madell said the battle for control of Vicksburg and the Mississippi River was not confined to one day or a few days, or to a limited geographic area. So he said the observances of the campaign will extend "beyond the park's boundaries."
