Wade Miley Inks One-Year Deal With The Astros

The Houston Astros lost starting pitcher Charlie Morton this off-season and it seems unlikely that Dallas Keuchel will return but on Thursday they've retooled. Houston has added a starter in veteran Wade Miley who pitched for the Milwaukee Brewers last season.

The deal is worth $4.5 million for one year and the contract includes $500,000 in incentives.

MLB.com's Mark Feinsand reports that Miley has passed his physical with the team and is set to be introduced on Friday.

The southpaw is 32, he's coming off of a solid season with the Brewers after posting a 5.61 ERA with the Baltimore Orioles in 2017. However, Miley's increased usage of a cutter in 2018 aided his rebound year, as the lefty finished with a 2.57 ERA over 16 starts and then finished with a 1.23 ERA over four postseason starts which included one phony start in Game 5 in the NLCS against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Another aspect the led to Miley's success last season was that he lowered his walk rate by nearly five points from '17 to '18. It's amazing what happens when you avoid giving up free bases.

The top of the Astros rotation is solid with Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole. From there it will be a smattering of Colin McHugh, Miley, and whoever wins the fifth starter spot between Brad Peacock, Framber Valdez, or Josh James.

Wade Miley has gone 71-76 with a 4.26 ERA over eight seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Boston Red Sox, Seattle Mariners, Orioles, and Brewers.
