HAHNVILLE, La. (AP) — Beginning in August, St. Charles Parish residents will pay more in wastewater fees.

Officials say an average increase of about 57 cents per 1,000 gallons will boost the current $4.67 rate to $5.24 per 1,000 gallons. Parish officials say the increase will help the Wastewater Department move toward financial self-sufficiency. The department operates completely on user fees. It has not raised rates since 2006.

Parish President V.J. St. Pierre says the department has used more than $11 million from the parish's general fund to complete needed refurbishments and repairs. The increase will go toward helping with other capital projects and improvements.

The new rate is effective July 1, but residents won't see the change on their monthly bill until August.

It is expected to generate an extra $415,196 in revenue.
