Welsh Will Seek State Funds For Street Paving

WELSH, La. (AP) — Welsh officials have agreed to seek help from the state to fund a $1.9 million street-paving project.

The American Press reports the project calls for the asphalt overlay of just over a mile of the gravel part of Derouen Street and a section of the gravel portion of Joseph Street.

Initial plans for the project called for the town to pay for 62 percent to 68 percent of the project's cost using a combination of tax revenues dedicated to street improvements and reserve funds. The remaining costs would be paid by property owners.

But concerns from property owners had town officials looking at other options.

The funding would require the town to put up at least 25 percent of costs and request up to 75 percent from the state.
