WESTWEGO, La. (AP) — The City Council has voted to honor military veterans by declaring Veterans Day a city holiday.

The Times-Picayune reports the measure had been sought for months by City Councilman Glenn Green.

The move doesn't mean Westwego employees will get another holiday. To make up for Veterans Day, the council removed New Year's Eve as a paid city holiday.

Westwego recognizes 12 holidays for employees; council members said adding a 13th would be too costly.

Green, an Air Force veteran, raised the issue last Veterans Day — Nov. 11 — by saying he felt uncomfortable with the council meeting that day when the federal government and businesses recognized Veterans Day as a holiday.
