Earlier today, several Acadiana parishes were added to the list declared a disaster area by the Federal Government.

But what does that mean?  We already knew it was a disaster.

Well, in the case of government assistance, the answer is plenty.

The Advocate reports up to $33,000 is available for flooded homeowners without flood insurance, provided they live in neighborhoods that didn’t require the insurance and are in a parish that has been declared a disaster by the federal government, according to FEMA.

It is important to document the damages and to register for assistance. The phone number is (800) 621-3362.

In addition, it means the feds will pay up to 75 percent of the state's expenses in dealing with the emergency.

And, just because your parish hasn't been declared a disaster area as of yet, doesn't mean it won't be.  So make sure you get your documentation as more parishes are expected to be added to the list.
