Why do men in Louisiana cook?

That was the question asked by the Judy Walker of nola.com | The Times-Picayune Tuesday after she read the book "The Essential Cookbook for Guys."

Walker speculated that it had to do with the culture of hunting and fishing here in Louisiana, or perhaps it has to do with the "overall reverence for food."

Sam Stokes, digital guru and sometimes contributor to "Nathan & Bernie in the Morning," said it's "incredibly unique that it's a macho thing to do in Louisiana."

"The person cooking is sort of the epicenter of the party--they're the host," Sam said. "And in order to be a host at a Louisiana party, you gotta be the one doing the cooking."

According to men who called into the program, they learned and were taught how to cook so that they could feed themselves. "It was either learn how to cook or go hungry," one caller said.
