MOREHOUSE, La. (AP) — A Louisiana  Department of Wildlife and Fisheries officer was shot on patrol Thursday night on Russell Sage Wildlife Management Area in Ouachita Parish.

Department spokesman Adam Einck says in a news release that Sgt. Scott Bullitt is in serious condition Friday in a Monroe hospital.

Authorities say Bullitt and another officer stopped a vehicle containing two people about 6:40 p.m. After a short interview, Bullitt believed the occupants to be impaired, and walked back toward his vehicle, according to the news release.

Authorities say a passenger in the stopped vehicle shot Bullitt in the lower back. He was later identified as 29-year-old Luke Jarrod Hust of Monroe. After a brief search, Hurst was arrested about 11 p.m. Thursday.

The driver of the vehicle is also being questioned by La. State Police.
