BREWSTER, Mass. (AP) — Undersea explorer Barry Clifford calls it "the yellow brick road" because it's literally sprinkled with gold dust.

This figurative road runs along Cape Cod's shifting seafloor and Clifford believes it leads to hundreds of thousands of undiscovered coins from the wreck of the pirate ship Whydah (wih-DAH').

Clifford and his team recently took the season's final trip to the Whydah, the only authenticated pirate ship wreck in U.S. waters.

The "yellow brick road" Clifford refers to is a gold and artifact-strewn path extending between two points of the Whydah wreck. Clifford thinks the coins may have been dumped along that path as the Whydah broke up.

The latest trip uncovered evidence Clifford may be right. But as summer weather ends, he won't be able to get back to the Whydah until spring.
