State Police report 22-year-old David Hilton was traveling east on Louisiana Highway 14, when for unknown reasons, his truck went off the right side of the road, flipped over and then hit a tree.

Hilton crashed on highway 14 at Grosse Isle after troopers say he was not buckled up.  The Vermilion Parish Coroner pronounced Hilton dead at the scene.  His passenger, 27-year-old Grant Vercher of Erath, was taken to a hospital suffering from moderate injuries.  State Police say he was not wearing a seat belt either.

State Police say that routine toxicology reports are pending from the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.  The crash also remains under investigation.

State Police statistics show that 60 percent of the people who died in fatal crashes in Troop I last year were not wearing a seat belt.  Louisiana law requires anyone in a motor vehicle has to be buckled up.
