State and federal wildlife agents are looking for whoever killed two bald eagles near the Plaquemines Parish community of Phoenix.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says agents believe both were killed Tuesday.

Capt. Steve McManus says he cannot comment on how the eagles were killed, but both apparently were killed the same way. He says they're at a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lab.

He says a sheriff's deputy found one on the Mississippi River levee, and a search of that area turned up the second.

The southern bald eagle is on the Endangered Species list. Shooting or injuring one carries a fine of up to $100,000.

The department says there are significant cash rewards for anyone whose information brings arrest and conviction of whoever did it.
