-The S&P 500 surged in the first five minutes of trading after the government said the U.S. added 117,000 jobs, but all gains were erased in less than 20 minutes and the market plunged deep into the red amid speculation the U.S. would lose its top credit rating. 
 
-Stocks recovered mid-day, after Reuters reported the European Central Bank is pressuring Italy to make reforms.
 
-Crude oil closed at $86.88/ barrel.
 
-And gold settled at $1,652 an ounce.
