Alcohol consumption in the US is on the rise. Americans are consuming 70% more alcohol than we were in 1990. The trend is global, according to Medical News Today. Public health officials are alarmed at this trend, and it's expected to continue.

Officials with the World Health Organization warn this trend will adversely affect people's health worldwide. The most dramatic increases are in countries with low per capita income. Jakob Manthey, author of the study, says "Before 1990, most alcohol was consumed in high-income countries, with the highest use levels recorded in Europe. However, this pattern has changed substantially, with large reductions across Eastern Europe and vast increases in several middle-income countries, such as China, India, and Vietnam."

European countries have have traditionally been the world's largest per capita consumers of alcohol.
