A park built by thousands of volunteers has been destroyed by fire, and authorities suspect arson.

The Saturday night fire destroyed much of the Shiver Me Timbers Millennium Park located near the Lake Charles Civic Center.

Lake Charles Fire Chief T.A. Jones says the cause appears to be arson.

Shiver Me Timbers Millennium Park opened in September 2000.

Local businesses donated money and supplies, and 5500 volunteers from the community worked 12 hours a day. The park is 20,000 square feet with a tower, train, plane and other features made of splinter-free wood, a multistory Louisiana Hurricane slide, and a tree house.
