As graduates, whether high school or college, embark on their first full month of the next leg of their life's journey, I want to share something with you that I have learned in my just-a-few-decades on this planet.

Learn at least one new thing a day.

This John Wooden guy knew what he was talking about:

It’s what you learn after you know it all that counts.

After you groan and moan, allow me to tell you something. There will always be something you need to learn. There will always be something you don't know. The great secret of maturity is understanding that it is okay to admit that fact. It's okay to either ask someone for the answer or find it for yourself. "I don't know, but I will find out" is a powerful phrase that shows a willingness to accept your own limitations and the initiative to overcome them.

But wait! There's more!

If you take those first steps into the self-imposed educational forest and make a promise to yourself to learn at least one new thing a day, you'll begin to fill that mighty brain of yours with fun, interesting facts that make you, in turn, a fun, interesting human being!

A few of my "one things:"

    Indy 500 Trivia

A coworker of mine is a huge Indianapolis 500 fan. He watches every single left turn, every single lap. He was describing Alexander Rossi's run-out-of-gas victory at the 100th race. We were watching the replay, and this line of men bends over and kisses the ground. I had no idea what in the world was going on! Apparently, it's a tradition that started in 1996 by Dale Jarrett.

Then, the winner drinks milk. This, too, is a tradition dating back to the 1930s when moo-juice was three-time champion Louis Meyer's beverage of choice. Since then, the Milk Board became a sponsor and each winner takes a swig of his (or her, to be fair) preferred milk.

And the rest, as they say, is history!

Strep Throat & Scarlet Fever Are Related!

Two of my children had strep throat last week. In true mother fashion, I went to the internet to find out more about it. Lo and behold, I discovered that the same bacteria that causes strep throat causes scarlet fever. What's good to know is that scarlet fever isn't as scary as it sounds, and it's preventable with proper hygiene. Now, I know!

    That's How It Works!

We installed a new computer system at work that runs the radio station. Sure, there was a tutorial and training on how to operate it. Anyone who has ever been involved in a process such as this knows the learning never stops. Just the other day, I was doing what we deejays do and happened upon what would seem to be a small step that made part of the whole job so much easier. I was so excited that I had learned to do that! It was one thing. It made me smile.

    Snapback

Yes, it's the name of Old Dominion's latest release. However, it's also a baseball cap that has the snaps in the back. It shouldn't be confused, according to Wikipedia, with a trucker's cap which has the mesh cover. I would only discover this fact after hearing the on-air discussion between two of my coworkers on a sister station. I'm thankful I'm not the only person in my chosen profession who was clueless. My education about the definition of "snapback" as it refers to headgear served as my one thing on that particular day.
