Audit: Special Education Center Students Too Old
ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) — A state audit has found that more than half of the 79 students at the Louisiana Special Education Center in Alexandria are too old and should be transitioned to community-based homes run by a division of the Department of Health and Hospitals.
The Town Talk reports (http://townta.lk/KwwGXp ) an investigation by Louisiana Legislative Auditor Daryl Purpera's office also found that since 2006 the education center has operated a residential group home -- the Transitional Family Life Center -- for 11 former students.
The superintendent for the schools, Kevin Lemoine, said Wednesday that his office and the auditor's office have been in "collaborative" talks and that the education center was working to fix the problems.
