Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Charles W. Boustany, Jr., (R-Southwest Louisiana), today called once again for the complete lifting of the de facto moratorium on offshore energy production, on the heels of the announcement that 13 energy producers will be allowed to resume drilling activities in the Gulf of Mexico.

“I hope to continue to see more operators resume production in the Gulf as quickly as possible,” Boustany said.  “As we see gas prices rise, America needs to increase its independence from foreign producers and utilize the resources we have.  While this is a step in the right direction, I will continue to press this issue until better communication between the administration and producers is established, and energy production has returned to its normal levels.  I called for working groups consisting of shallow and deep water operators and members of the Obama administration from both Washington and the Gulf Coast.  I will continue to make these and other recommendations to Director Bromwich until this crisis is completely resolved.”

The 13 companies that were notified do not need to submit revised exploration or development plans for supplemental National Environmental Policy Act reviews, according to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE).  However, all of these companies must comply with the new regulations that were released by BOEMRE late last year.

Boustany has worked tirelessly on this issue since the moratorium was placed on American energy production in May, and has continued to fight for the workers of Southwest Louisiana since the ban was lifted in October.
