A condo in the 200 block of Long Plantation Boulevard caught fire Tuesday night and Lafayette firefighters say the central heating system in the attic is to blame.

Lafayette Fire Department Public Information Officer Alton Trahan says it took firefighters about three hours to extinguish the fire and help the owner. She told them when she smelled something burning, she opened an access door to her attic and found the fire, then called 911.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find smoke and flames coming from the roof of the condo. The fire caused heavy fire damage to the attic and roof. The interior of the apartment took on substantial water damage while the fire was being put out. There was also light water damage to an adjacent condo.

Fire Investigators say they will continue to investigate the cause of the fire and how the apparent malfunction happened.
