Cleaning Oiled Beaches Causing More Damage?
The Coast Guard says the cleanup of oiled beaches along the Gulf has reached a point where crews, heavy equipment and scrubbing can cause more damage to the ecosystem than leaving what oil is left alone. A Coast Guard says birds, fish and other species are more likely to be damaged by an aggressive cleanup than by simply leaving remnants of oil in place and letting it slowly degrade.
