BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Authorities say a Baton Rouge couple made one of their children sleep on the floor of a locked closet while other kids were subjected to various abuses.

The Advocate says 24-year-old Nicholas Menia and 30-year-old Zaikiya Duncan were booked this week with one count each of cruelty to juveniles by East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office deputies.

It wasn't immediately clear if they had a lawyer.

According to the police affidavits, one of the couple's children was sent to a hospital by school officials for treatment of burns to feet, genitalia and buttocks. Medical staff said the burns were consistent with being submerged in hot water.

Police say the child was locked in the closet to prevent the victim from "escaping" and "stealing food."
