Dustin Poirier Sets His Sights On Conor McGregor
Lafayette UFC fighter Dustin Poirier has already singled out his next opponent that he wants to punch.
Surely the last few days have been a roller coaster for Dustin Poirier. He was submitted in the third round by Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242 this past weekend. He even posted a since-deleted video to Instagram that put his future in the sport in question.
That all changed Tuesday (9/10) when he tweeted from Youngsville that a Conor McGregor rematch made sense.
McGregor is arguably the biggest name in MMA. He and Poirier met back at UFC 178 in 2014. McGregor finished Poirier with punches at the 1:46 mark of the first round.
Conor is known to talk A LOT, and get in his opponents heads. Poirier admitted that it happened to him before that fight.
“I used to overthink a lot,” Poirier told MMA Junkie in September 2015, one year after UFC 178. “In that Conor fight, with the mental warfare that kind of went on, it made me think more. It sounds like a cliche, but I’ve always cared too much about this.”
After that fight, Poirier has only lost two out of 12 fights, where McGregor has lost two out of six (not to mention the loss in boxing to Floyd Mayweather).
McGregor hasn't (legally) fought since his loss to Khabib in October of 2018 at UFC 229. He's gone through some legal troubles in that time, but has since said his focus is to get back in the octagon for the UFC.
What do you think? Would a Poirier v McGregor 2 be a fight that would make sense?
