MINDEN, La. (AP) — State police and Webster Parish sheriff's deputies are working to secure hundreds of thousands of pounds of explosives at the Camp Minden industrial site that officials say were improperly housed by a company.

Col. Mike Edmonson, head of the Louisiana State Police, said Tuesday that an estimated 1 million pounds of explosives are spread out around the northwest Louisiana site.

The area is near a local high school, the parish prison and the town of Doyline, which has about 800 residents.

Edmonson says local and state officials intend to move the explosives within the next few days, after determining the safest method and the needed evacuations for the move.

The explosives are on property leased by Explo Systems Inc.

Explo Systems officials didn't return calls for comment Tuesday.
