A family is fortunate to be okay after a fire caused heavy damage to their home on 901 Surrey Street. Lafayette Fire Department PIO Alton Trahan says it happened Tuesday morning around 6:00 a.m.

Fire investigators say Nakeisha Harris woke up hearing the smoke alarm and noticed the living room on fire. She then woke up her sister, Lashonda Harris, her sister’s husband, Desmond Arceneaux, and her 13-year-old nephew. They were all able to make it out of the house before firefighters put out the fire.

They lost all of their belongings.

Fire investigators say they are still investigating the cause of the fire, which began in the living room.
