FRANKLIN, La. (KPEL) -- A Franklin man hauling sugar cane on Highway 90 was killed Saturday afternoon after crashing his truck into a canal.

State Police Trooper Stephen Hammons says 34-year-old Roderick Preston somehow lost control of his fully-loaded 18-wheeler, driving the truck across the median and across the frontage road before finally plunging into the Hansen Canal.

Preston was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hammons says the truck was recovered from the canal late Saturday, but it's still unclear what caused Preston to lose control.
