As we close in on the final school bells of the 2018-2019 school year in Acadiana educators, administration, and members of area school boards are already looking forward to next year. For residents of Iberia Parish, the landscape of the 2019-2020 school year could look a lot different depending on the outcome of a vote scheduled before the Iberia Parish School Board.

According to a report on the KATC website members of the Iberia Parish School Board could vote as early as Wednesday night whether or not to close one school and merge two others in the parish. The schools in question are more specifically North Street  Elementary in New Iberia and Jeanerette Elementary and St. Charles Elementary in Jeanerette.

Members of the Finance Committee have officially proposed that the Iberia Parish School Board consider shuttering North Street Elementary and moving students and faculty to either Park or Daspit Elementary. The committee also recommends that Jeanerette Elementary and St. Charles Elementary merge.

These moves are being suggested as a better way to manage funds and resources for the school district. The Iberia Parish School Board is expected to meet on these recommendations as part of Wednesday's scheduled meeting. A vote to act on these recommendations could also take place at that meeting as well.
