Increased Security Measures at St. Mary Magdalen Church Following Communion Service Incident
In response to a recent security scare during the First Communion ceremony, St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Abbeville, Louisiana, has announced new safety measures, including the presence of uniformed officers at all future masses. The decision comes after a distressing event this morning when a suspicious individual entered the church, causing panic among the congregation.
The incident occurred when an unidentified person opened the church's back door during the service. Alert parishioners quickly confronted and escorted the individual outside, and the Abbeville Police Department was promptly notified. The suspect was taken into custody shortly after that. Following the arrest, officers entered the church to ensure there were no further threats, which inadvertently caused a brief period of panic among those present.
The church has expressed its gratitude towards the parishioners who acted swiftly to avert what could have been a more severe situation, as well as to the local police for their rapid response. Chief Mike Hardy of the Abbeville Police Department, in cooperation with the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office and assistance from the FBI, is currently leading the investigation into the incident.
To reassure the community and enhance security, the church has decided to station uniformed police officers at all upcoming masses. The church leadership has also invited the First Communicants and their families to receive Holy Communion at any mass they attend this coming weekend.
The St. Mary Magdalen community continues to request prayers and support as they navigate this challenging time and implement measures to ensure all congregants' safety and peace of mind.
