LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) — Nearly 100 inmates at Phelps Correctional Center sent Father's Day cards to their children.

Assistant Warden Jolene Constance tells the American Press (http://bit.ly/MjtPAV ) the new program aims to remind offenders of what is waiting for them on the outside, to help fathers connect with their children — and, hopefully, to encourage them to get a job to support those children.

Constance said 98 inmates participated. The cards were mailed last week to children all over the United States and even out of the country.

They said: "The true meaning of Fathers day is celebrating my love for you," with room for imnates to fill in their own sentiments.

Inmate Darryl Soileau said it made him realize that Father's Day isn't about getting a present — the child is the gift.
