As pregnant women are now eligible to be vaccinated for COVID in Louisiana, many expectant mothers question if it is safe? West Jefferson Medical Center OB/GYN Dr. Jennifer Bigelow said always talk to your personal physician first, but they are recommending it.

“I believe that the CDC and ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists) are also recommending that. In fact, some of them have said it’s unethical not to give them a vaccine,” said Bigelow.

COVID vaccine clinical trials for pregnant women are currently underway to gather more data. Bigelow said being pregnant puts you in a higher risk group if you contract COVID.

“As we know COVID-19 and pregnancy does place patients at an increase for adverse outcomes compared to nonpregnant people, that’s becoming more apparent as the pandemic’s progressed,” said Bigelow.

Another concern among those of childbearing age is that the vaccine can affect fertility. Bigelow said there is no evidence-based research indicating it does.

“That was something that went viral online that is not evidence-based at all. There’s no evidence to support that is will affect your fertility in the future,” said Bigelow.

Bigelow also recommends nursing mothers also be vaccinated for COVID when eligible.
