DPS Cracks Down on Dangerous Drivers Along I-20

In a recent traffic enforcement operation, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) targeted a notorious stretch of Interstate 20, from Colorado City to Eastland. This portion of the interstate, which includes the Abilene area, has earned a reputation as one of the most dangerous sections of highway in Texas. With growing concerns about reckless driving and criminal activity, DPS launched an intensive three-day operation to improve safety for all motorists.

During the operation, DPS troopers stopped an astounding 567 vehicles, including 91 commercial motor vehicles (CMVs). Law enforcement officers issued 177 citations for a range of infractions, with 99 speeding violations topping the list. Additionally, 33 CMV drivers were cited for specific safety violations, reinforcing the need for stronger enforcement in this high-traffic zone.

Significant Drug and Criminal Arrests

DPS didn’t just target traffic violations—officers also made seven arrests for drug-related offenses, seizing methamphetamine and marijuana in the process. Four other individuals were apprehended on various criminal charges, and troopers recovered one stolen vehicle during the operation. The heightened enforcement presence on I-20 served as a major deterrent to criminal activity.

CMV Drivers and Vehicles Out of Service

In addition to making arrests, the DPS placed nine CMV drivers and 12 vehicles out of service for safety violations. Ensuring that these vehicles and drivers met required safety standards was a key focus of the operation, with DPS prioritizing the prevention of future accidents and injuries on the highway.

A Push for Safer Roads

As DPS continues its mission to crack down on unsafe driving and criminal behavior, operations like this play a critical role in keeping Texas highways safer for everyone. The presence of troopers along I-20, one of the state's busiest routes, sends a clear message: public safety is a top priority.
