Louisiana Woman Hilariously Translates Cajun Accent From ‘The Waterboy’
Lafayette, Louisiana (KMDL) - When it comes to the way Cajuns are portrayed in movies, we're not always too thrilled with the outcome.
Sometimes, Hollywood gets it pretty close though, like Eduard "Del" Delacroix from the movie "The Green Mile". His accent almost went a little too far, but for the most part, it's fairly respectable.
Then, we have the movie "The Waterboy" where the Cajun accent of the character Farmer Fran is so over-the-top at times it's unintelligible, even if you're born and raised here in Acadiana.
Obviously, Farmer Fran's accent was meant to be pushed past the point of ridiculous.
All these years later, the joke is on them because one Acadiana woman has taken to TikTok to actually translate the Cajun gibberish, and does so accurately and hilariously.
This is the most Louisiana thing you'll see all week.
How Is Cajun French Different From Traditional French?
Louisiana's Cajun French can tend to vary quite a bit from traditional French.
Heck, Cajun French can even vary depending on what part of Acadiana you're from.
Traditional French is based on the Parisian dialect and is standardized in France.

Cajun French evolved from 17th and 18th-century French dialects brought to Louisiana by Acadian exiles from Canada. The Acadien's French then mixed with Spanish, African, Caribbean, and Native American influences to give us what we speak today.
Cajun and Creole French often use words no longer used in modern French, as well as older grammatical French structures.
By and large, Cajun French is more informal than traditional French, sometimes called Country French.
So, we can understand each other's French here in Acadiana, but people not from here have no shot.
This is where Acadiana's Erin Clair comes in...
Cajun Woman Translates Farmer Fran From 'The Waterboy'
Erin Clair was born and raised in Acadiana, so speaking Cajun French is something she knows a lot about.
We're not completely sure where in Acadiana she's from, but just listening to her speak a couple of words you know instantly she can't be from anywhere else in the U.S. but Acadiana.
On her TikTok channel, Erin routinely posts videos teaching people how to speak Cajun French.

She also took on the challenge to try to figure out and translate what Farmer Fran from "The Waterboy" is actually saying in the movie.
She's done a pretty incredible job at it too, all while taking a few liberties for humor.

For all these years, I simply thought he was doing a parody of Cajun accents. I didn’t realize until today that he was speaking lines and the players, at least the native Louisianans, should have been able to understand what he was saying.
Then I came across this video on TikTok by Erin Claire and she translates the mostly-unintelligible gibberish for the rest of us so that after all these years we can learn what he was saying
