Why Online School Threats Get Taken Seriously
For parents around Lafayette and Acadiana, there's an important takeaway here.
Something posted online can travel incredibly fast.
A Snapchat video that might have been seen by a relatively small group of people can quickly get shared among students, parents and school employees. That's what authorities said happened in this case.
And when a post contains a threat involving students or a school, law enforcement is going to take it very seriously, every time. In this case, the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office investigated the alleged threat, obtained a warrant and made an arrest the same evening.
Parents and students throughout Lafayette, Acadiana and the rest of Louisiana should take threats involving schools seriously and report concerning posts to the appropriate school officials or law enforcement.
For now, the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office says the student remains accused of making the threat, and the criminal case will move forward through the court system.
