(KMDL-FM) The game of football, no matter where it's played, is emotional. It's very physical; it's pretty easy to see. The mental aspect of the game is not as noticeable, but there is a lot of thinking that goes into such a brutal sport. Perhaps it's the combination of brain and brawn that makes the sport so attractive to so many.

Maybe it's the "battle-scarred" mentality that creates such a passion for the game among fans. And nowhere on the face of the Earth is there more passion about football than in the Gulf South of the United States.

Some have said that football in the South is a religion. I don't find that to be accurate because people sometimes change religions. I don't think I have ever seen a Southern football fan switch allegiance to another football program.

They might tolerate it because of marriage or a good bet on DraftKings, but you aren't getting many people with a rooting interest in a Southeastern Conference team to pull for another school without something drastic happening.

Why Is Passion For College Football So High In Louisiana and the Gulf South?

Nowhere is the passion for college football stronger than in the state of Louisiana. We have major universities in Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Monroe, Ruston, New Orleans, and Lake Charles. There are other schools, perhaps with less attendance, in other communities. And regardless of where those schools are located, if they put a football team on the field, they have their share of passionate fans.

But if you really want to see passion for college football, you have to follow the LSU Tigers and their legions of fans. You see, for LSU, it's not about just winning, it's about winning championships. And it's not about winning games, it's about imposing your will on your opponent.

What Disparaging Remarks Did Brian Kelly Make About LSU Media and Fans?

This can lead to some interesting post-game discussions or diatribes, depending on who you ask, during the post-game press conferences. Here is a clip from Saturday night with LSU Head Coach Brian Kelly suggesting that members of the media? LSU fans? Anyone who is listening is a spoiled brat. Here, listen for yourself.

That's a post on the X platform by WBRZ TV Sports Director Michael Cauble. I think Cauble has a great question for the coach. It seemed to be based on observations made at the game the Tigers just completed on Saturday night. But as Michael suggested in his "tweet," maybe the timing was wrong. Subsequently in a Monday press conference, Brian Kelly apologized to Cauble.

Regardless of how you felt LSU played on Saturday night, they still came away with a win. The next opponent for the Tigers is Southeastern Louisiana, one of the schools with a much smaller attendance than LSU. The Tigers are a prohibitive favorite in the game. I don't see any point spreads published for the game, but one projection suggests that LSU will win by 35 or more.

Let's just hope they can convert some third downs against the Lions. We don't need a repeat of Coach Kelly going off against the media and the fans for wanting to know everything there is to know about LSU football. Aren't you glad folks don't come and pepper you with questions right after you've finished your workday? I guess that's why Mr. Kelly makes a little bit more in his pay envelope than maybe you or I do, right?
