Which SEC School Has Been Fined the Most for Storming The Field?
Last Saturday the LSU Football team did not play. Perhaps it was great scheduling, fate, or old-fashioned good luck that the Tigers of Baton Rouge were not scheduled to play a college football game. The reasoning behind that statement has to do with what happened to some of the Southeastern Conference's highest-rated teams this past Saturday.
You probably heard that the University of Alabama was defeated by Vanderbilt in college football last Saturday. A Vandy victory over the Crimson Tide happens about as often as a sighting of Halley's Comet. Meanwhile, just down the road a few hundred miles in Fayetteville Arkansas, the Razorbacks were whipping Tennessee, another highly rated SEC Football power.
In both cases, fans of the winning team stormed the field to celebrate the rare victories. But that storming of the field does come with a cost. Vanderbilt had to pay a fine of $100,000. Meanwhile, in Arkansas, the final amount of their fine for field storms was $250,000. If you weren't aware, the SEC has rules concerning the storming of fields and courts after sporting events. And the fines attached are pretty hefty.
Which SEC School Has Been Fined the Most for Storming The Field or Court?
It's actually a tie between the two schools we've just reported on, Vanderbilt and Arkansas. Since the SEC implemented the rules regarding storming the field and or court Vanderbilt and Arkansas have been fined the most. Since 2004 the two schools have racked up $730,000 in fines under the rule.
The third-place school in the field storming sweepstakes is LSU. The Tiger faithful have earned $705,000 in fines for their celebratory antics following big LSU victories. The rest of the schools in order of most to least fines are Auburn, Kentucky, Texas A&M, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Missouri, Tennessee, and Florida.
The schools that have never been fined by the SEC for field or courtstorming are Alabama and Georgia, probably because they expect to win big games. There is also Texas and Oklahoma, they're new to the conference and haven't played any big SEC games yet. And finally, the only other SEC school that has not been fined for storming the field or court is Mississippi State.
Maybe that's because Bulldog fans know how to act like they've been there before. Or perhaps it's because State sucks. They got walloped by Toledo for goodness' sake. Perhaps State fans will storm the field this Saturday when they face Georgia. I am betting no fine will be levied in that game.
